A key focus in the world at the moment is the environment and our preservation of it.
The dairy industry like other industries in New Zealand has come under increasing pressure to improve its environmental performance. Dairy processing operations can have a considerably negative effective on the environment if the wastewater is not treated correctly. The dairy industry handles large volumes of milk, and the major waste material from processing is the water. The water removed from the milk can contain considerable amounts of organic milk products and minerals. In addition, cleaning of plant can result in caustic wastewater.
The high costs associated with cleaning and wash down within food processing (either small scale or large scale, dairy factories, ice cream plants, cheese manufacturing and packaging, fruit juice production, fish processing and meat processing plants) all have the same problem. How do we treat our wastewater in a cost effective and efficient way, meet all regulatory requirements, and control costs?
The use of a Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) system offers an ideal solution for a variety of contaminants. Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) is an effective industrial and municipal wastewater treatment, clarification, and thickening technology.
DAF is a water treatment process that clarifies wastewater by the removal of suspended matter such as fats, oils, and grease (FOG), as well as heavier settled matter and, with the correct chemicals, can reduce the COD load substantially.
DAF technology is compact, efficient, simple to operate and economical to run and is a proven solution for the dairy industry. Dissolved Air Flotation is an ideal treatment method to purify dairy wastewaters and remove the fats and solids in a cost effective way.
At Arla Foods the valuable fats are removed and recovered by DAF plant (without any chemical additions). Further processing with effluent from other parts of the plant is done using a second DAF plant.
The DAF flotation process requires less chemical pre-treatment for flocculation to occur therefore reducing costs. Further savings are achieved because DAF clarifiers are not as expensive compared to complex bacterial processes or large settling basins.
Jonassen Industrial Projects Limited exclusively offers KWI DAF equipment as part of their full service for water treatment − from an initial assessment of the project, to fee-based laboratory work, and through to onsite dewatering trials, using their unique test scale equipment.
KWI Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) Technologies
KWI provide several types of DAF technologies, including the latest, patented KWI Megacell technology, recognised as the leading DAF technology for wastewater treatment. DAF is highly competitive in capital cost and reduces site space requirements (small footprint), especially at larger treatment plants. In anticipation of the needs of a changing world, KWI has developed seven DAF clarification design platforms, each specific to particular process solutions, offering a complete range to solve today and tomorrow’s wastewater treatment challenges.
Whilst some wastewater may require the addition of coagulants and flocculants to pre-condition, some wastewaters can be pumped directly to the DAF plant. Fine air bubbles are then passed through the water, which adhere to the (flocculated) solids, oils, grease, and fats, and rise to the surface. The resultant surface layer is then removed by skimming and the treated water continues through the process. These clean off-take waters can be selectively reused around the plant, for example for yard wash down, vehicle cleaning etc.
The skimmed waste can be directly collected and disposed of as qualified waste, used as a digester feedstock or, to take the refinement even further, can be de-watered to reduce handling and transport costs. For efficiently designed DAF units, sludge production will typically be between 1-2% of the total wastewater flow. De-watering can effect a further reduction of over 33% of sludge volume, therefore, minimising disposal costs.
